Nursing Informatics, a term coined to describe the integration of nursing science with information and computer science, has developed into a mandatory focus for all registered nurses on a global scale. For the past four decades, literature, research and a growing body of practice have addressed the theoretical and practical aspects of informatics in nursing.
In this day and age, most experts emphasize the need for every nurse whether employed in the practice or education setting, to develop a minimum of a “user” level in computer literacy and informatics theory. To that end, national initiatives such as the TIGER Collaborative in the USA and CASN/Canada Infoway in Canada have released recommended nursing informatics competencies that every nurse is expected to develop.
The Nursing Informatics Learning Center approved CEU courses offer ways for nurses to continue their evolution in nursing informatics theory and know-how from the comfort of their own home and earn their state or provincial license requirements at the same time. They also help to prepare nurses who wish to become certified in nursing informatics. These courses can be taken by nurses from anywhere in the world – they provide concrete information and guidance to meet these national competencies and equip nurses to provide high quality 21st century care
The courses in our course catalog have been carefully designed by curriculum and content experts to help you to learn and retain what you have learned so that you can actually apply the content to your practice. Although these courses are approved as continuing education content, they have been fashioned and presented in a way that you actually engage with the content to reinforce what you are learning. This is true for all of our courses, but especially the ones with multiple modules.
NILC courses are designed to provide a comprehensive and wide-angle lens view of nursing informatics to help ground beginners in the fundamentals and still meet the more diverse needs of those with more advanced knowledge. These completely on-line, self paced courses are approved by the State of California Board of Registered Nursing for full CE credit; CE Provider No. CEP 14891. Most State & Country licencing Boards accept CE credit approved by other State Boards. They can easily be used to support your nursing license renewal and certification or recertification requirements. All of our courses are carefully constructed to provide theory and practical knowledge relevant to nursing informatics certification. For instance, we have many students who take them to prepare for the ANCC Certification exam or renew their Speciality licence. Certification guidelines outline that nurses must have completed 30 hours of continuing education in informatics nursing within the last 3 years. All of our courses are suitable for this requirement. These courses can be also be used for CE certification renewal, for the total 75 hours. As well, they meet the requirement that 51% of the 75 recertification hours are directly related to your Nursing Informatics specialty. Thus for both initial certification and recertification, our courses meet the requirements: "Continuing nursing education (CNE) approved for nursing contact hours by an accredited provider or approver of CNE" as well as "must be directly related to the full scope of your certification role and specialty."
